May Day: An Inexpensive and Fun Family Tradition
May
Day began as a Spring festival
long ago when people would
gather together on May 1st
to celebrate the coming
of Summer.
While there are a number
of different customs that
have been a part of May
Day festivities, including
dancing around a Maypole,
our personal favorite involves
the gathering of flowers
to be put on the doorsteps
of our neighbors and friends.
While the original purpose
of this ritual was to keep
out troublesome fairies,
we just like to remind our
friends that we are thinking
of them on a beautiful Spring
day.
An important part of this
activity is secrecy. Once
you place the flowers on
someone’s doorstep,
you must ring the bell and
then leave, or hide nearby
and reveal yourself after
they have discovered the
flowers.
What does this have to do
with being a Discount Diva
you may be wondering? Well,
instead of using baskets
to hold flowers (which lack
water for maximum flower
longevity), we prefer to
collect inexpensive vases
year round from our local
resale stores for our May
Day floral arrangements.
This way the vases can be
part of the gift to our
friends and neighbors as
a way to remember the special
day.
We have found some beautiful
vases over the years and
some have been 50 cents
or less. And if you do not
grow cut flowers in your
own yard (which we do),
you can typically find inexpensive
flowers at Wal-Marts and
even some of the larger
grocery store chains.
