Since there is TREMENDOUS
variation among antiques stores, we
will concentrate on just a few important
points.
Advantages:
Many Divas may shy away from these
stores because they don't collect
antiques. What you may
not know is that many antique stores
have great stuff from the '60s or
'70s which is actually very modern
in appearance.
Also, many antique stores have great
dishes and glassware, that are beautiful,
often one of a kind and priced at
or below what it would cost you in
a regular house wares department.
There are also all kinds of unexpected
treasures you would never think to
look for in an antique store such
as beautiful silk lingerie holders,
magnificent picture frames (even if
you don't like the picture and buy
the frame for other art or a mirror),
interesting one-of-a-kind jewelry,
beautiful perfume bottles for your
vanity and much more.
The furniture is usually well made
(no particle board or cardboard backing)
and the styles range from fancy to
very simple and contemporary. Wood
types and colors also vary and most
can be refinished or painted (yeswe
believe in painting if it suits you).
Other advantages of shopping in antique
stores is you can get to know the
vendors and have them scout for particular
things you might be seeking. Also,
they often have sales (particularly
around their slow months which vary
by region) and bargaining is always
an option.
Most dealers honor a standard 10%
discount on all things over a certain
price (usually $25) unless it is marked
firm but it never hurts
to offer what you are willing to pay.
If they don't take your offer right
away, you can leave your name and
number and if the item doesn't sell,
you may have another shot at it at
your price.
Antique stores often take checks or
credit cards and some have return
policies. Another advantage of antiques
stores is they are usually open each
week so shopping can be convenient
(and frequent). Even on days that
you can't afford to shop, you can
always browse to get good ideas for
re-purposing items you found in a
yard sale or flea market.
Downside:
One of the few potential downsides
of shopping at antique stores is that
it is not always easy to get a great
deal. Dealers generally know the value
of their items and have a limit as
to how much of a discount they will
offer you. Bust since they often got
items at a deal themselves, friendlier
ones will gladly pass these savings
along to you.
Bottom
Line: Antique stores
carry more than true antiques
and can be a great source for vintage
items and quality furniture for your
home.
