Buying Secondhand Works For Houses Too!
What do deconstruction, disassembly, dismantling, Discount Divas and Discount Dudes have in common besides a shared letter of the alphabet? A lot! They all involve recycling, re-purposing, saving money and helping the environment! While many Discount Divas and Dudes have successfully scavenged furniture and other household and personal accessories from a variety of sources, some have taken their scavenging skills to a new level…deconstruction.

What is deconstruction and how can you benefit from it? Read on>>

Flea Market in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Frequent business trips often take me to interesting places. On one such trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico with Diva Missy, I discovered the Albuquerque Fairgrounds Flea Market. This flea market is known for having a great selection of local art that can be purchased at a fraction of the price found in local galleries. One of my favorites items are painted tiles. These tiles come in various shapes and sizes and have a variety of subjects and themes such as landscapes, the Native people, and replicas of famous paintings (non-Native and Native). Read more>>

Thrift Store Tea Party
Are you looking for an innovative but inexpensive birthday party idea for children? We have one that might be right up your alley. If you have a good thrift store near by, consider taking a group of children to it and give them each a specific dollar amount to spend. Have the children find "dress-up" clothes for a "tea party". Hats, wigs, walking sticks, handbags, jewelry, shoes or boots, in addition to interesting clothes, can make very dramatic party costumes. Read more>>

Dear Diva
Dear Diva: My wife has a particular fondness for charcoal BBQ grills - you know, the rusted-out, no handles, falling apart ones that can be found in trash piles? I hold my breath and speed up a little whenever we go by someone else's trash pile on the street. What can I do to help her see the light? Signed, John "Speedy" Daigle, Tallahassee, FL

Dear Speedy: First, there is no such thing as rust, only patina. Secondly, the danger of "speeding up" when driving past trash piles is far more dangerous and costly than a pesky obsession with patina-covered grills. Have you priced the treatment for whiplash lately? As an alternative, we would suggest the following:

Embrace your wife's commitment to recycling and buy a stiff wire brush or steel wool, some Greased Lightening for the dirt and grime, and pour on some full strength vinegar to dissolve that "patina" away.
Carry old throws and drop cloths in the back of your car so the patina (as pretty as it is) won't rub off on your car seats.
Finally, invest in a big roll of aluminum foil, line the numerous grills and develop a profound love of grilled meat, chicken, pork, fish and vegetables!
Avery Dennison and the Great Paper Give-away
Well Divas, Diva Missy here, and I have decided to share one of my best kept secrets with you in the hopes that those of you that can take advantage of this opportunity, will. Avery Dennison, a manufacture of office supplies and products donates their leftover paper rolls to churches, schools, sports leagues and community groups in the areas local to their plants. Additionally, in my neck of the woods (Peachtree City, Georgia,) they put it outside of their office two days a week for anyone who wants to come and pick some up. If you don't live near an Avery Dennsion factory, consider the paper-related industries in your area and call them. Read more>>
